Some Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome to the Sailing Mary Waters FAQ page, where I answer some of the most common questions people ask me about my life on the water. This page will expand over time.

  • Living aboard a sailboat slashes the typical costs of a mortgage, utilities, and daily expenses, allowing for a significantly lower cost of living that frees up resources to fuel adventure. The feeling of freedom is unmatched, waking each day with the open water as your front yard and the horizon as your limit. Life simplifies when stripped down to essentials, making each moment more intentional and meaningful. This lifestyle opens doors to unique experiences—docking in hidden coves, exploring remote areas, and forging bonds with fellow sailors worldwide—creating memories no conventional life can match.

  • It’s been over a decade, really. It all started with a chance stumble on an earlier Delos YouTube video. Then, I was asked to join a family friend on his boat one day, and that was the kicker…

  • It took about 3 years of looking, on and off, mainly in the Maryland and Virginia areas, but I did travel to Maine once.

  • I took sailing lessons at The Maryland School of Sailing and Seamanship in Rock Hall, MD. I have earned my ASA 101, 103, 104, 105, and 107 certifications.

  • Mary Waters is a Canadian-designed racer-cruiser that combines refined handling with robust durability for challenging conditions. She is a 36.5-foot masthead sloop with a fin keel and a rudder on a partial skeg. A shoal draft of 4.92 feet allows for cruising in shallower waters.

  • Mary Waters is more than just a clever play on words to an ideal sea state—it’s a tribute to my maternal grandmother, my mother’s mother. The name fits perfectly on every level.

  • I hope to set sail for The Bahamas in Oct/Nov 2025

  • The reason is simple and echoes why I sold my house to buy a sailboat: I have a passion for travel, and what better way to explore the world than by bringing my home along for the journey?
